Session 1C – Culture Meets Scripture
Speaker(s) – Jo Shetler & Amy West
Location – The Ark. Date & Time – Monday 19 May, 14:00–15:00

What do believers do when cultural customs clash with their allegiance to God? CmS provides principles that help believers use Scripture to both evaluate their underlying beliefs and then discern what to do. When pressures from family, peers and community require participation in those practices, where do believers gain needed support to make choices that align with Scripture to honor God? What if those choices entail great relational costs and powerfully entrenched cultural beliefs? These types of questions are core to this breakout session. The hour introduces a process to uncover the driving forces that demand the practice be done and then uses Scripture to see how God’s Word speaks to those forces. It aims at providing a way for believers to develop culturally meaningful responses that align with Scripture.

Session 2C – Generational Issues of Diaspora Communities Concerning SE
Speaker – Sunny Hong
Location – The Ark. Date & Time – Monday 19 May, 15:45–16:45

First-generation immigrants tend to keep the culture of their homeland and their mother tongue. The 1.5 generation immigrants are bilingual, or multilingual, and can successfully negotiate different cultures but they do not really belong to any culture. The second generation immigrants choose the language in the country of resettlement as their mother tongue, and feel at home in that country. Since an immigrant/diaspora family has multiple migration generations in their families, their family dynamics are unique. This session discusses the issues different generations deal with, and offers ideas about how to minister to them.
Speaker(s) Bio:

Sunny Hong

Sunny Hong was born and raised in South Korea. As a third-generation Christian, she had the privilege to witness the entire nation responding to God, and sending out missionaries. After immigrating to the US in 1984, she joined Wycliffe Bible Translators in 1994 and worked as a mobilizer, an anthropologist, and an adjunct professor at Dallas International University. She received her Ph.D. in intercultural studies at Biola University in 2014. Sunny currently serves as the director of Global Diaspora Services and senior anthropology consultant at SIL International. She also serves on the SIL and Wycliffe USA boards. She is passionate about Bible translation, bridging cultural gaps, and speaking up for minorities and refugees.

Session 2D – Report on the Psalms That Sing Pilot project in Africa
Speaker(s) – Sebastian Floor & Chris Lyndon
Location – Sheepfold. Date & Time – Monday 19 May, 15:45–16:45

“Psalms that Sing” (PtS) conducted a three-year pilot in 6 languages in Africa to test a 10-step multimodal approach to translate the psalms in poetry, and then to have it performed in song or chant. In other words, an approach that moves from oral to text to performance. In my presentation I will discuss some of the findings of the pilot and sketch the way forward to have the Psalms translated and engaged with simultaneously. Many projects are transitioning from NT to OT and this approach may be an option for some who want to see the Psalms in poetry and in song in their respective languages.

They served for 20 years with SIL in Mozambique where they facilitated the translation of the NT, the Pentateuch and the whole Psalter in the Mwani language. Session 3C – What is a Photo? Knowing Jesus by His Image
Speaker – Johannes and Sharon Merz
Location – The Ark. Date & Time – Monday 19 May, 17:00–18:00

We live in a visual world that is increasingly dominated by photographic images. But what are photos really? Does everybody have the same understanding about what a photo is and how it works? We use an example from Benin, West Africa, to illustrate how people understand photos differently from how we view them in Europe. Many do not see photos of people as representations, but rather as being part of who they are. When people see a photo of Jesus – in a film, for example – they don’t see him as being represented by an actor, but as Jesus himself. We consider what this means for ministry and propose that we need to break the global predominance of white Jesuses.

Session 3E – Multilingualism Assessment Tool (MAT)
Speaker – Maik Gibson
Location – Kantine. Date & Time – Monday 19 May, 17:00–18:00

The Multilingualism Assessment Tool (MAT) enables communities to understand more deeply how they use their languages, and what that means for Scripture Engagement and Translation. When used with church leaders and translators, it has helped many to see new ways of using translated material and involves them in a more meaningful way in decision making around Bible translation. In this session we will give a brief introduction to MAT, examine its impact, and look at challenges in its implementation, asking how it can be better integrated into strategy. Session 5C – How to Work with People From the Honor & Shame Cultures
Speaker – Sunny Hong
Location – The Ark. Date & Time – Tuesday 20 May, 14:00–15:00

One of the strongest values of people who come from an honor-shame culture is “saving face” (keeping and preserving the reputation) of those they esteem and those to whom they belong. People who come from an honor-shame culture have a very distinctive understanding of honor-shame and their behaviors spring from that understanding. This session explains how the concept of honor-shame shapes their life, how honor-shame is applied to women differently than men, and how you can relate more meaningfully with people from an honor-shame culture.
Speaker(s) Bio:

Sunny Hong was born and raised in South Korea. As a third-generation Christian, she had the privilege to witness the entire nation responding to God, and sending out missionaries. After immigrating to the US in 1984, she joined Wycliffe Bible Translators in 1994 and worked as a mobilizer, an anthropologist, and an adjunct professor at Dallas International University. She received her Ph.D. in intercultural studies at Biola University in 2014. Sunny currently serves as the director of Global Diaspora Services and senior anthropology consultant at SIL International. Session 5E – SE Guide / SE Tools
Speaker – Peter Brassington
Location – Kantine. Date & Time – Tuesday 20 May, 14:00–15:00

This session will focus primarily on the use of relaunched Scripture Engagement Guide EMDC.guide (now available in app form and for wider translation), also introducing EMDC.tools and the increasingly important Multilingual Assessment Tool. Language can clearly be a huge barrier to effective discipleship, but translation and distribution of the Bible and other resources are not enough. Experience over many years in translations in many hundreds of languages has shown that there is a lot more to think about both coming from the perspective of Bible Translation organizations and of the church. The videos and questions in the Scripture Engagement Guide and app provide a starting place for discussions to explore many of the factors that need to be in place for effective use of the Bible.
Speaker(s) Bio:

Peter Brassington

Breakout Session #6 (Tuesday 20 May, 15:45–16:45)

Return to Schedule

Session 6A – Securing the Gospel: Cybersecurity Strategies for Missions
Speaker – Emmanuel Christian
Location – Main Hall. Date & Time – Tuesday 20 May, 15:45–16:45

In many parts of the world, following Jesus comes with real dangers—and in today’s digital age, those dangers extend online. Governments, extremist groups, and other opponents of the Gospel use surveillance, hacking, and censorship to track, silence, and endanger believers. This session is for missionaries, pastors, digital evangelists, ministry leaders, and anyone who needs to protect their work and the people they serve. We’ll explore practical cybersecurity strategies to safeguard sensitive communications, secure digital evangelism, and navigate online threats. By blending wisdom from Scripture with real-world security measures, we can ensure that the Gospel continues to reach even the hardest-to-reach places.

Emmanuel Christian

Emmanuel is a trained Software and Cybersecurity Engineer with nine years of experience in the technology industry, nonprofits, and academia. Session 6B – Digital Disciple Making
Speaker – Clyde Taber
Location – Upper Room. Date & Time – Tuesday 20 May, 15:45–16:45

The Church has decades of history in traditional media campaigns using a broadcast approach, ‘pushing’ content out to large audiences. The game has changed with the advent of new media paradigms, especially social media. Social media is the primary way most people engage with content. It is no longer enough to tell the story you want to tell over traditional media or social media channels, and hope that you will connect with an audience. We must learn to shape our strategies and our content to ‘pull’ people into conversations. In this seminar, you will learn how to connect with audiences that filter and search for the stories they want to hear, based on their interests and desires. You will learn an approach that can foster deeper connections and make “disciples who make disciples” to saturate a culture.
Speaker(s) Bio:

Clyde Taber

Clyde leads the Visual Story Network (VSN), a community of 600 organizations and 7,000 leaders in 99 nations. VSN accelerates the mission of the Church by equipping our generation to use media, story and innovation to make disciples of all nations. Since the launch of VSN in 2007, more than 1,000 projects, products and partnerships have been established. Prior to VSN, he oversaw new media development for Jesus Film Project (Magdalena: Released from Shame, Damah Film Festival, JESUS: Fact or Fiction?) and coordinated the campus work of Cru throughout North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. Clyde holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland/College Park and a Master of Divinity / Missiology degree with honors from Denver Seminary. He speaks English, French and Turkish and is always working on his biblical Greek and Hebrew. To learn more about Clyde, go to www.visualstory.org/tabers.

Session 6C – Ancestor Veneration: Why the Big Fuss
Speaker – David Gray
Location – The Ark. Date & Time – Tuesday 20 May, 15:45–16:45

Ancestor veneration is common around the world. It is even practiced by many in Central Asia. In Scripture engagement terms this amounts to fear of spirits and is therefore something believers in Jesus the Messiah try to avoid, yet the practice is so embedded in society that when things get tough such believers sometimes go to a medium and contact their deceased relatives, who are viewed as having power over their future lives. This creates a dichotomy where they believe in Christ for their ultimate salvation but look to ancestral spirits to solve day-to-day life problems. This breakout session will be an opportunity to discuss such issues in the light of Scripture and Scripture engagement best practices: what does Scripture say about ancestral spirits, and what are the best ways of encouraging believers to trust God rather than spirits for their day-to-day needs?
Speaker(s) Bio:

David Gray

David coordinated a Bible translation project in Central Asia for many years, as well as working as a translation advisor. He is now based in the UK and teaches Scripture engagement (SE) and Translation at Moorlands College, but also travels to West Asia, where he consults for several translation projects, both as a translation and an SE consultant. He has written a PhD on the topic of reverence for ancestors in Ancient Israel and the Hebrew Bible, using a social-scientific (mainly ethnographic) approach, which is awaiting the viva (defence). You might see him playing a ‘banjo’ and singing at EMDC. He has been teaching at EMDC for more than seven years.

How do we determine if the effort to translate a language variant is necessary to reach a people group? This workshop presented by Global Recordings Network (GRN) asks the question, “How do we decide if the translation effort into a language variant is worth the investment of resources?” While we do not claim to have the answer to this challenging question, we will present a few principles, illustrated by field stories, which we have learned through decades of ministry and have an open group discussion time to identify other principles and issues that need to be considered. What do Jesus and Paul teach us about communicating Christ cross-culturally? What does that mean for our different contexts? How do we start to apply these ideas? In this interactive session, we will first explore what the Bible teaches us about the need for clear cross-cultural communication. Jesus was a Jew, engaging his own and other cultures. Paul was the Apostle to the nations, crossing many linguistic and cultural boundaries. Then we engage with examples closer to home, in Buddhist, Muslim, and Hindu contexts. Speaker – Clyde Taber
Location – The Ark. Date & Time – Thursday 22 May, 14:00–15:00

There is a tragic gap between Jesus speaking and His people hearing worldwide. The most important question of all humanity is when God asked, “Where are you?” People need to come out of the shadows and come face to face with God in Christ and take Him at His word and follow. In this session you will develop your Biblical understanding of God’s heart to speak to His children. You will learn a few simple practices that will help you experience a transforming friendship with Jesus by talking and listening to Him like He is here because… He is.
