There are currently fewer international flights to Chiang Mai than before COVID. Instead of booking one ticket from your departure airport to Chiang Mai, it might be significantly cheaper to book a ticket to Bangkok and then a separate ticket between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. However, this may be less convenient and lead to more complications if there is a flight delay. There may also be differences in baggage allowances between the tickets.
